When is the Best Time to Remodel your Home in the US?

Summer, fall, winter or spring— when is the best time to do some home remodeling?

This is perhaps one of the most common questions of homeowners.

The answer?

Well, as long as you are ready to do it, any time is a good time.

However, there are specific times that are better for a home remodeling project that not only ensure cost-savings but also faster completion.

With this in mind, we offer some recommendations on the ideal guidelines in order to help keep your home remodeling project on track from timing and a cost standpoint.

Based on regions where there’s a notable change of season, the ideal time for a home remodeling project would be spring or fall. However, that window of time where there is dry weather with temperature ranging between 60 – 70 degrees is small, so if you wish to work year-round, then you can look at other time periods.

January – March Remodeling

Working during the cold winter months was considered a bad idea. However, from January up to March is actually a great time to start some projects.

The dry air and frozen ground are great for digging foundations as well as pouring concrete footers rather than during high humidity months that cause muddy grounds.

If your foundation is finished and a room addition is framed just before the rainy season, space can be covered during the irregular weather of the spring. You will likely have fewer rainy days where no one works on the construction site.

Additionally, the winter months also tend to be a slow season for builders since everyone is waiting for spring to come as well as the tax refunds to start their home remodeling projects.

April – June Remodeling

The month of April through June is the busiest time for almost all builders. So, it is probably the time when you will pay the most money for materials and builder’s time— the law of supply and demand.

Traditionally, spring is the home building season. This is not only because consumers are getting the money to do remodeling projects, however, it is also because it is the time when people start to come out of winter after weeks of staying at home, seeing things that need to be changed or wanting to be replaced.

Home remodeling projects such as patios, decks and outdoor rooms are the most common plans for this timeframe. Decks will require hand-digging and with spring comes a usually softer ground. Additionally, homeowners should be able to enjoy and outdoor space and deck for relaxation and family bonding in the coming summer and fall season.

July – September Remodeling

During summer months, tackling the indoor remodeling projects such as bathroom or kitchen is most recommended. The attic bedroom is not a good place to start since you don’t want to be dripping in sweat.

However, to most people’s surprise, roofing remodeling projects are more commonly done during the summer heat. This is because roofing materials will need higher temperatures in order to seal.

Builders, at this time of the year, tend to be cautious about their safety and turns away jobs if it is too hot.

Meanwhile, summer tends to be a convenient time for homeowners. Since it is the school vacation for kids or planning a summer vacation, homeowners most often plan for remodeling projects during this time of the year in order to avoid living with renovation sand coming back to a new addition in their home.

October – December Remodeling

The first part of this quarter is suitable for new constructions and outdoor work, however, most homeowners traditionally want their remodeling projects to be finished.

This is the time of the year where builders need to work harder to meet the deadline and scramble to get everything done by mid-November, due to the impending holidays.

But, if you are willing to have builders in your home during the holidays, then this is a great time to schedule anything from a kitchen remodel to an addition. This is because business is slower during this season and materials tend to be less expensive. The shipping, however, may take longer, so make sure to plan for those extra days into your timeframe.

Factors To Consider To Determine The Best Time To Do Home Remodeling Projects

Weather

Whether you are working on a small or large scale home remodeling project, the weather will be the major aspect you need to consider.

For instance, you can do the roofing and exterior siding remodels done during the dry season months and save the master suite, bathroom and kitchen remodeling for the wetter, colder months.

Budget

You will also need to take into consideration your budget. If you wish to save some cost on your remodel, then the low season is a good time to start.

Aside from the discounts, you can get from contractors because of the reduced workload, the price for construction materials is usually at its lowest since the demand is also lower.

However, if you have the budget and are ready, then anytime is a great time to do some remodeling.

Contractor Availability

Sure, you can do some DIY remodeling, but if you want professional results or planning a large remodeling project, you will need to hire contractors.

Now, hiring contractors may seem easy since you have several options to choose from, however, you will have to consider their availability.

If you are planning to do remodeling projects during the peak season, then you might have to book contractors in advance because of the high demand. Most of the time, contractors get fully booked quickly. In addition, if they do try to fit you in their schedule, they might make mistakes during the process and affect the results of the project.

Juggling Contractors

Whether it is a roof replacement or a bathroom project, home remodeling takes a variety of experts in order to finish the project. Not only do you need to schedule an appointment with a general contractor, but you will also need to look for other tradespeople such as electricians, plumbers, and drywallers for the job.

You will need to ensure that you have all the available hands before starting a project in order to keep your improvement projects on schedule.
